Post-workshop, with plays to read and monologues to find

8 July 2008 (Tuesday)

The workshop is over. It started off a bit rocky. I felt rusty and sometimes (silently) questioned the teacher’s logic. By the end, I was thankful for all of the help and felt that I had learned some new things. I desperately needed that practice in front of people. The students were a motley mix, with a large age range. Some took the workshop more seriously than others, in a very evident way.

On the last day, the teacher and her assistant took me aside to encourage me to continue acting. They said they saw a lot of potential in me and that it’d be a shame if I didn’t continue. I thought this was some nice encouragement, and it was something I needed at the moment. I don’t know how serious they were, but they didn’t have to do that and the compliments came unprovoked. So yay!

I spent this past weekend away, on vacation with my boyfriend. On my never ending search for audition monologues, I read Suddenly, Last Summer by Tennessee Williams. I enjoyed it very much and can imagine performing Catherine Holly’s monologues.

Of course, the day I returned (after meeting an actor who moved from L.A. to overseas), I received four other plays to read! I’ve started in on The Heidi Chronicles by Wendy Wasserstein and will hopefully finish that and some of the rest shortly. I’m still waiting on the acting books.

I have a private coaching session on Saturday and need to have some material prepared (and not just my go-to Larry Shue monologue!). I’ve been scanning craigslist for some acting opportunities. I figure that, at this point, I need to get out there and get my feet wet as much as possible.

So bring it on!
